Today we'll be introducing the comment from the Editor-in-Chief of Premiere Japan, Gregory Starr.
---Short Shorts Film Festival 2003---
There is great pleasure in being the judge of such a prestigious festival--you get to see many films, and you get to see them before anyone else! But there is also great pain. You have to find a personal way to rate films that are hugely different--in budgets, in creative support, in technical prowess. It's a difficult process, deciding to give more or less weight to, say, the higher production values of this film over the clever idea behind that one. But that's the dilemma of award giving. With the world situation as it is, I had expected a number of the films to center on war and death and destruction, and there were--some of them powerful and moving. But I was also pleased to see that there was still plenty of variety--from celebrations of the simplicities of life to studies in the absurd. That, after all, is what I love about the possibilities of short film festivals: the incredible spread of nationality, creed, race, and ways of looking at the world around us.
Grefory Starr
--Profile-- Gregory Starr came to Japan from Tennessee in 1970. He was a construction worker, kindergarten teacher, and band manager before he got his first job in the film world--which was as the English voice of Hiroshi in Otoko wa Tsuraiyo. His thirty-first job in the film world was writing the lyrics for the theme song of Nidaime wa Christian. At some time between the two he discovered journalism--which led him to his present career as Editor-in-Chief of Premiere Japan.

Short Shorts Film Festival 2003 in Hakodate!

Short Shorts Film Festival in Hakodate was held in 7/18-7/20 in still already?) chilly Hakodate. The festivals spread through Hokkaido starting from Sapporo. Along with the "Hakodate Special" program, putting spot onto the local creators, there was a screening of Mr. Jyunji Kojima's "Impracticable theory" and Mr. Kouki Tange's "Fastener" from "ANIMATRIX". Short Shorts Film Festival's posters and flyers were set in many cafes and restaurants around the "Friday Night Club" which gave the area more taste of the festival. The cafe "Salon" on the 5F of the "Friday Night Club" was temporary changed into "Short Shorts Cafe", and was crowded with the short film fans during the show break.

Tokyo Festival Prize-winning-films

The awarding ceremony of Shortshort Film Festival 2003 was taken place at the closing session, which was from 18:30 on the final day of the festival.
Firstly `the Audience Award`(with the prize of 100.000yen from Kodak), which was chosen by the poll of the audience after screening, went to `The Platform` filmed by Robin Walters from New Zealand.
Then `the Jury's Special Award(with the prize of digital hi-vision camcorder GR-HO1 from Victor) `, which was selected by 5 judges that are quite familiar with films and images, was given to `The Platform` as well, and it resulted in receiving two prizes redundantly.
Last of all `the Shortshort Award`(with the prize of 300.000yen), which was well-selected by Short Shorts Executive Committee, went to `UNA BALA` by the two codirectors; Noir Edgar San Yuan from Mexico and Ibon Antunano from Spain.
Every prize-winning film was shown after the awarding ceremony. Screening of these stringently selected films made us feel anew the appeal of the short films. For more detail, please consult the report of Tokyo festival in Harajyuku at Tour Info.

SSFF Flags Fly over Omotesando!

May 22, the festival flags appeared along fashionable Omotesando Boulevard, announcing the beginning of the Short Shorts season! Flying next to the Short Shorts flags are "Green Bird" flags. This non-profit organization promotes cleaning projects in Harajuku-Ometasando with the slogan "Clean town cleans people's minds."
The festival continues its tradition of "Sweepers" on Omotesando, an important Short Shorts event for filmmakers, staff, and volunteers since the festival first opened five years ago. To commemorate our 5th anniversary, this year we will collaborate with Green Bird to clean Omotesando . . . and maybe some minds too!
