Main Statement of the STOP! Global Waming Competition

Stop global warming with the power of visual images!
For the 3rd annual "Stop! Global Warming" competition, once again, extraordinary films from around the world will be presented here!

In our joint effort to prevent global warming with “Team -6%,” a grass-roots environmental group, the “Stop! Global Warming” competition was inaugurated in 2008. To mark the 3rd year of the this competition, we have joined forces with the Ministry of Environment to achieve the new, higher goal of cutting CO2 emissions as put forth in the “Challenge 25 Campaign.” The stellar jury members for last year’s “Stop! Global Warming” competition included actor/director Masahiko Tsugawa, actress/model Yu Yamada, and actor/sportscaster Kazunari Nagashima. The Best Short Award (Minister’s Award, the Ministry of Environment) was awarded to “Silent Snow” from the Netherlands (director: Jan van den Berg). In addition, “Silent Snow” was chosen by a jury of five selected J-Wave listeners and was awarded the J-Wave Award, sanctioned by J-Wave, Tokyo’s #1 FM radio station.

The fight to stop global warming is not something that can be won by taking action just once. Constant and vigilant action is necessary. This year, over 318 short films were submitted from around the world, a clear indication that this issue is still at the forefront in the minds and concerns of filmmakers. In addition to the 13 nominated short films, we will screen a music video by 30 Seconds To Mars, formed by Jared Leto, titled “A Beautiful Lie.” This video was filmed in the Arctic with an environmental theme against global warming. Also screened will be “Beds Are Burning,” a music video that calls for stopping global warming and features appearances by former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Duran Duran, Marion Cotillard, Mila Jovovich, among 60 artists, actors, and celebrities. Don’t miss this chance to see these shorts!!
