9:50 The Festival Begins!

Guess who showed up? Director Kosuke Ose, of 'roots,' who came all the way from Tokyo. "I wasn't able to make it to the Tokyo screenings, so I came here instead. I wanted to see my film on screen," he said.

11:40 Meet Matsumoto Moviegoers

Mamoru Ochi, who has been working with the SSFF since last year, shared his views on shorts. "Simply because they're short, they're easy to watch and understand." One of his favorites this year was 'Verrouillage Central," or "Central Locking." Mamoru said he might be moving to Sapporo to work. "I'll definitely be here to attend next year's festival!"

We also met up with Sylvia Racik, a native of Australia who moved here in February to teach English to children. She recently saw some promotions for the festival and thought, why not? In Australia films are inexpensive to see, so she'd normally see one a week. At a festival, however, there are a lot of films to see, one of the reasons she enjoys attending them. She was delighted to meet the director of 'roots,' Kosuke Ose.
