In its three previous open calls, the project has received more than 3,200 submissions from around the world. Kodansha’s dedicated editors—who have long supported the creative work of novelists and manga artists—serve as producers, working closely alongside filmmakers throughout the process. To date, the Lab has produced 11 short films, which have been awarded, selected, and screened at over 60 international film festivals. And in 2026, the production of its first original feature film has been officially announced.
