Tokyo Mouse Story”is a story about a mother and daughter, inspired by Aesop’s fable “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse.”
The mother mouse lives in the countryside, while her daughter has left home to build a life in Tokyo.
The story begins when the daughter returns home for the first time in a while.
Back in her hometown, many of her old friends are getting married and starting families. Her mother worries about her and gently asks, “Don’t you think it’s about time you got married too?”
But in Tokyo, the daughter has work, friends, places she wants to go, and countless things she still wants to do.
It is not that she never wants to get married. She simply feels that it does not have to happen yet.
In her hometown, marriage is seen as a natural milestone in life.
In Tokyo, there are many different ways to live, and many different choices to make.
The story explores that difference in values through the close, and sometimes complicated, relationship between a mother and daughter.
In the second half, the mother comes to visit her daughter in Tokyo.
As they walk through the city, share meals, and spend time with the people in her daughter’s life, the mother gradually begins to see a side of her daughter she had never known before — an adult who has grown into her own life.
On the morning she leaves, the mother writes her daughter a letter.
They have not come to agree on everything.
But the mother begins to trust, just a little more, the life her daughter has chosen for herself.
It is a story about the distance Tokyo can create between a parent and child — and the love that becomes visible because of that distance.
Through the eyes of two tiny mice, “Tokyo Mouse Story” portrays contemporary Tokyo and the evolving relationship between a mother and daughter.
