Sand is the second-most exploited resource in the world. In Southeast Asia, escalating demand fuels an opaque and often illegal trade. Hourglass, an immersive documentary short, juxtaposes Singapore's ever-rising skylines to the sinking shores of Vietnam's Mekong Delta, creating an unsettling portrait of an urgent crisis carrying profound human costs.

We believe this may be the first documentary film on sand mining that has been filmed in Vietnam, especially given how under-researched the topic is. Due to the sensitivities around the subject, we had to conduct anonymous interviews, which we then pieced together in a composite narration format. We also employed different stylistic techniques that immerse viewers and help them better understand the scale of the sand trade and its human toll. What may also be interesting for audiences is how we decided to bookend the realities in Vietnam with our own privilege and perspective. This made us realise how the comforts and progress we experience in Singapore may be connected to consequences that unfold elsewhere.
