In the short film Flicker, I incorporated the visual motifs of “circles” and “squares” as representations of the characters’ emotional states. At birth and in early childhood, our feelings, thoughts, and even the world around us are filled with “roundness.” However, as we grow older, our ways of thinking develop edges, and our surroundings—dominated by smartphones and buildings—become increasingly “square.” Before we know it, our lives are filled with such rigid forms. I felt that cinema has the unique ability to convey these subtle, often unnoticed changes in a direct and honest way. This is not to deny the value of “squares.” While embracing the importance of a “square” heart, I hope that, from time to time, we can soften those edges and rediscover the “roundness” within ourselves.
