Born and raised in Amoy, China, Kargo Chen obtained his MFA degree and graduated with honors from Hong Kong Baptist University. His thesis film, CHEN CHEN, won the Best Student Short Film and Audience Choice Award at the Calgary International Film Festival, and the Best Director Award at the Drama International Short Film Festival, and was screened extensively at film festivals.
