Jurors Comment - Official Competition

Competition Jury

This year the members of the jury felt a lot of excitement considering this was the 15th anniversary of the festival. There was one point we were all in agreement on though, and that was the Japanese entries were not of the same caliber as the films screened in the other competitions. In general the works in the Japan Competition left a weak impression. I’ve acted as a jury for other festival before and have come away with the same impression. There were a couple works that I felt were worthy of an award, but it was the films in the Asia International and International Competitions that were amazing across the board. Even several of the animated works left very strong impressions. I also thought there were four live action shorts screened under these two competitions that exceeded even “Curfew”, the winner of last year’s Academy Award for a live action short film. It was stimulating and a great opportunity to be surrounded by so many great films. As a result of the number of excellent works to choose from there were a number of disagreements at times when we were trying to select the winner for the Grand Prix.
